Web 2.0 Lingo
Lets face it. We're not all exaclty computer hackers here. A lot of the social media slang used on this website may be new, unclear or completely foreign to some. So before you go clicking on our link to wikipedia to figure out what the heck that weird acronym stands for, we've compiled a list of some important nomenclature of the Web 2.0 vernacular.
Aggregation- bringing multiple content sources together into one interface or application.
API (Application Programming Interface)- a defined interface to a computer application or database that allows access by other applications.
Beta-the first version of software released outside the organization or community that develops the software, for the purpose of evaluation or real-world testing. Beta level software is between 60% and 70% complete, generally includes all features, but may also include known issues and bugs of a less serious variety.
CSS (Cascading Style Sheet)- is a stylesheet language used to describe the presentation of a document written in a markup language. Its most common application is to style web pages written in HTML.
Embedding- integrating content or an application into a web page, while the original format is maintained.
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)- is the predominant markup language for the creation of web pages.
Mashups- combination of different types of content or data, usually from different sources, to create something new.
RSS (Really Simple Syndication)- a group of formats to publish (syndicate) content on the internet so that users or applications automatically receive any updates.
Tag Cloud- a visual depiction of tags that have been used to describe a piece of content, with higher frequency tags emphasized to assist content comprehension and navigation.
Tagging- attaching descriptions to information or content.
Virtual Architecture- the creation of avatars (alternative representations of people), buildings, objects, and other artifacts inside virtual spaces.
Widget- small, portable web application that can be embedded into any web page.
